Many people in southern Xinjiang became wealthy, especially since cotton was considered \"soft gold.\" Starting in 2012, this attracted Wenzhou businessmen to the region for a \"land grab,\" and people from other provinces also came to seek their fortune. After 2013, both the international and domestic economic environments declined, agricultural exports plummeted, and prices fluctuated wildly. Many people chose to leave and return to their hometowns in the interior. However, newly recruited college graduates and workers continued to pour in, creating a situation of constant turnover. Due to a complex interplay of historical problems and current realities, Lengpo Yao Village still retains memories of slash-and-burn agriculture, maintaining a relatively traditional way of life and a generally low level of education. Even though Pan Xiaogui, an elderly man with mental instability, is deeply ingrained in his traditional way of life, the influence of modernity on the village is also evident in his mind during his travels: multi-story buildings replacing thatched houses, new tools replacing old ones, cement roads replacing dirt roads<\/span>… This juxtaposition of old and new is presented to Pan Xiaogui from his first-person perspective. While others are busy, he is busy too; others laugh at his perceived foolishness, but he smiles.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jingzhou prospered because of water, and also declined because of water. In the agricultural era, Jingzhou held a very important position in the Huguang region. The devastating floods of 1998 completely destroyed the light industry of Shashi (Jingzhou).

The bulldozer roared past, and Grandma's entire \"world\" - the land she relied on to survive, the familiar courtyard, and the corner that held countless memories - was instantly turned to dust in the dust.
